Welcome...

Welcome to canadianklezmer.bravehost.com! This site explores the colourful cultural history of Klezmer music in Canada.

Following the end of the Second World War, Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe arrived in Canada bringing with them their culture, language and ideologies. Along with the determination to preserve the Yiddish language within institutions and literature, the klezmer musical genre was not only well received within Canada, but its popularity and legacy continues to evolve today.

As music-culture ultimately rests in the people themselves such as their ideas, their actions, and the sounds they produce, this site explores the development of klezmer music in Canada in order to understand its cultural and historical significance.
